141. Warming Up

Amy cautiously enters the conservatory. The conservatory has hard wood floors and high wood-paneled walls. Amy glances upward and discovers that the ceiling is a glass skylight, through with a sea of stars can be seen. Musical instruments lie scattered around the floor, along with folding chairs, music stands, and assorted pages of sheet music. Amy used to play the baritone back in middle school, but gave up music when staying in the band would have meant taking marching PE in high school.

At the far end she can see a rotund woman in an operatic costume, accompanied by a piano that has no player. Amy gulps and hopes that it's just a player piano.

“La la la la la la la la la!” The woman is singing arpeggios.

“Me me me me me me me me me!” Amy realizes that the singer must be warming up her voice, perhaps for a performance.

“So so so so SO so so so so!” At the high middle 'so' Amy's ears hurt a bit; she winces in pain at the shrillness of the singer's high notes.

“Maybe I shouldn't be here...” Amy says to no-one in particular.

What should Amy do?

Stick around and listen to the singer
