16. Not Quite Frog Legs
“Oh, there they are!  I don’t have a moment to lose,” Rosella exclaimed to herself watching her favorite
pair of black heels bob perilously in the wretched muck.  She only prayed that she could cross the 12 feet in
time.  Without wasting any more time, she treaded into the water, taking as long strides as she could.  The
water in this part of the swamp was surprisingly cleaner than the rest of it.  There wasn’t really any mud here,
so the water was much easier to wade through.  More importantly, the ground was solid.  This was most
reassuring, as she had heard the nasty stories of the quagmires that existed in swamps that would suck a
plucky princess under forever, without giving a second thought.
The water gradually became deeper as she took each step away from the bank, leveling off at her slender
waist, when something bumped into her leg.  “Oh!  There must be fish in this part of the swamp.  How
interesting,” she said with a giggle watching the vague shadow swim around under the water.
Rosella’s anxiety eased as she watched the serene ripples flow away from her waist, causing her shoes to tip
and bob in the water just a few feet away.  She closed the distance with a few more gingerly steps, before
claiming her victory, “gotcha!” she said, closing her hands around her dainty black heels.
The princess’s victory was short lived though as the surface of the
water was overcome by an agitated feeling, followed by a great
splash.  A large scaly creature stood up from under the water
behind the unsuspecting Rosella.  Taking her by surprise, it
wrapped its large clawed hands around her tiny waist.  Despite her
terrified screams and protests, the swamp creature hoisted her
effortlessly out of the water, holding her upside down in the air,
legs kicking as her skirt fell embarrassingly around her torso.
Rosella looked down from her awkward angle to see the
mysterious monster that had her in its clutches, only to see its oily
sightless eyes staring back at her blankly.  More frighteningly were
the razor sharp teeth lining its large open mouth.  She gulped and
squirmed with all her girlish might as she terrifyingly realized what
was going to happen next.  Now had she been Connor a brutish lad
from her home of Daventry, she would have broken free of the
swamp creature’s grasp and gave it a good walloping.  She was
however, not Connor, rather she was princess Rosella of Daventry,
and a bit of a squirm was the best she could manage.  Thus, the
swamp creature dropped her down its gullet head first, gobbling
her up.  She kicked her legs defiantly in the air, as it swallowed her
whole.
Why does this always happen to me?
Holding its fattened belly with a painful feeling of indigestion, the swamp creature moaned and with a burp,
put its scaly hands to its mouth, pulling out a stretchy pair of sheer white nylons snagged in its razor sharp
teeth.  Crumpling them up, it tossed them to the wind, submerging back beneath the surface.  “I prefer frog
legs, but those were a close second,” it thought to itself.
