179. The Grand Hallway

Amy thinks back on her conversation with Boswell as she makes her way back to the ground floor. So that strange woman is dead and whoever runs this house is still in mourning. She can guess from Boswell's manner when she brought up the later wives that Boswell doesn't approve. Who could these women be? Where did they come from? And, more to the point, what happened to them? At least now Amy can explore the ground floor, though she suspects that if Shannon is anywhere, she's somewhere behind the door Boswell is guarding.

Amy looks around the Grand Hallway again. Now the doors have opened and she can get a better sense of what's inside. Through the door on the left wall near the entrance she sees what appears to be a sitting room, complete with large overstuffed armchairs, a fireplace, and various animal heads mounted on the wall. Through the door's mate on the right wall she sees rows and rows of books; Amy smiles as she realizes that this is a library. The glass door near the back wall has slid open and mist pours out. The greenery she can see makes her think this must be a greenhouse. The metal door has also opened, revealing a narrow, winding staircase. The hallway behind the staircase remains open and Amy can see numerous portraits and medieval weapons lining the walls. Curiously, the small door in the middle of the left wall remains closed. By process of elimination, Amy guesses that this must be the powder room Boswell mentioned.

Amy thinks for a moment, then makes up her mind. Her first destination is...
